Important Message from Don Tamaki, California Reparations Task Force “Following the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 triggering the largest protests in U.S. history calling for a racial reckoning, by September, 2020, the Cal Legislature passed AB 3121 creating the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans, with a Special Consideration for African Americans Who are Descendants of Persons Enslaved in the United States (Task Force or Reparations Task Force). https://oag.ca.gov/ab3121 The purpose of the Task Force is: (1) to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans; (2) to recommend appropriate ways to educate the California public of the task force's findings; and (3) to recommend appropriate remedies in consideration of the Task Force’s findings. I am one of the nine members of the Task Force appointed by the Governor and by the Legislature https://oag.ca.gov/ab3121/members. We convened in June of 2021, and on June 1, 2022, fulfilled our first charge of publishing a sweeping, nearly 500 page report drawing a through line from the harm of 246 years of slavery, 90 years of Jim Crow and racial terror, and decades more of continuing discrimination---to today’s outcomes—which are at once shocking but sadly, not surprising. Here’s the link to the Report: https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/ab3121-reparations-interim-report-2022.pdf It’s a lot to read, so check out the 29 page Executive Summary, https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/ab3121-interim-report-executive-summary-2022.pdf or the Introduction which give previews to the Report. Or you can browse selected chapters such as “Segregation—the Root of Many Evils” which covers housing. The Task Force is now focusing on developing recommendations for remedies to be submitted to the Legislature by June 30, 2023 at which point the Task Force will sunset. Simultaneously, we are developing recommendations to educate the public as to why reparations are long overdue. With respect to defining “what” we are asking of organizations, the organizations listed below have endorsed the levels they feel comfortable doing, including: Endorsement of the Task Force’s Interim Report; Endorsement of the mission and work of the Task Force, but not the Interim Report; Endorsement of the general concept of studying reparations for African Americans and promoting awareness and conversation, but not specifically the Task Force, or the Interim Report; and Endorsement by drafting their own customized resolutions
We hope that endorsing organizations will post endorsement lists on their websites, adopt reparations support initiatives that align with their mission, and actively publicize broad support of reparations. So far, we’ve gotten the following endorsements, with many pending, and a plan to reachout to civil rights, bar associations, professional societies, the faith community, labor, education, etc. in the works. ACLU Southern California ACLU Northern California ACLU California Action ACLU San Diego Imperial Counties Alameda County Bar Association American Constitution Society (National) Asian American Bar Association of the Bay Area Asian Pacific American Women Lawyers Alliance Asian Pacific American Bar Association of L.A.
