Support Tokaido Arts to become Japantown’s latest Legacy Business! Long-time community advocates Nikki Yoshikawa and Benh Nakajo have been supporting Robert Hsu, the second generation owner of Tokaido Arts, to secure Legacy Business status for the landmark Japantown art gallery located “on the bridge” to the Kinokuniya Building.

The San Francisco Legacy Business Program supports small businesses who, once designated, qualify for special grants, publicity, networking events, among other benefits. To be eligible, the candidate business must have (1) operated in San Francisco for 30 years or more, (2) had no break in SF operations for more than 2 years, and (3) contributed to San Francisco’s history or identity AND keeping its own history alive. In 1971, Robert’s parents Robert Man Hsu and Jean Hsiang Hsu founded the International Art Gallery, specializing in Japanese woodblock prints and fine Asian art. The name changed to Tokaido Arts in 2018 in a tribute to the most important trade route connecting Kyoto with Edo (modern day Tokyo) since the 1600s, scenes from which are a common theme in traditional Japanese woodblock prints.

Save the date for Sunday June 22, 2025 for San Francisco’s Third Annual Juneteenth Parade on Market Street! June 19 of each year marks the freeing of enslaved people by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Althought the Proclamation freed enslaved people after the end of the Civil War, in 1863, this was not communicated to African Americans in Texas for over two years, until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.

Seeking parade contingents! The Third Annual Juneteenth Parade on Market Street will begin at 11 am on Market & Spear, proceeding west along Market to 8th Street. Vehicles and parade floats will disperse south via 8th Street. Those walking in the parade contingent will disperse onto westbound Grove and northbound Hyde streets. Organized by Chizu Omori in partnership with Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages, the two-day national conference will feature well-known speakers and provocative workshops focused on Japanese American history and the connection to today’s attacks on immigrant communities, questioning of American citizenship, human and civil rights violations, racial discrimination and prejudice, and other themes.
