Issei History Symposium – August 21 @ JCCCNC
Scholars from the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Seijo University, UC Berkeley, and more will share new research on the pre–World War II Issei experience, using rare materials from the Center’s Japanese American History Archives. A special message from Shadows For Peace: The Hiroshima and Nagasaki Experience, a speaker forum series providing Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) the opportunity to share their story of hope for future generations:

This has been a busy year for anniversaries, including 50 years since the end of our part in the Vietnam War, 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE Day) & Victory in Japan (VJ Day). Two other 80th anniversaries will take place this August 6th and 9th, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While some might tend to think it happened in Japan and no Americans were hurt, we invite you to attend this event taking place August 24 to hear the personal testimony of Howard Kakita, who was visiting his grandparents when the A-bomb exploded over Hiroshima. Incarcerated in the Poston WRA camp, initially his parents had no news of his survival. Toshiharu Kano was in his mother’s womb at the time of the Hiroshima bombing. As a result he was born without an immune system, exposing him to many health challenges during his youth. 12 U.S. Army Air Corps crewmen held as prisoners also perished in Hiroshima. Shigeaki Mori, who met with President Obama during his visit to the Peace Park, preserved their story. This presentation combines historical background through film, recorded testimonials, and Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor) presenters, followed by a moderated discussion and Question & Answer session.

A powerful new exhibit at the San Francisco Historical Society documents the destruction of the Fillmore District during “urban renewal,” featuring 24 historic photos—including a special section on Japantown’s Japanese American community.
