A message from our partner the Japantown Community Benefit District: “Grace Horikiri of the Japantown Community Benefit District, along with Michael Vuong of the Tenderloin Boys & Girls Club, Shakirah Simley of Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, and James Spingola of Ella Hill Hutch have joined forces to bring our communities together in the new District 5! Please join us for the 2 day D5 Unified Event, a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and the various organizations in the Tenderloin and Fillmore/Western Addition.” 

The 2 day event will take place from 10am - 1pm with lunch provided with RSVP.

Thurs, 3/16 Always With Us Commemoration: Asian Americans Rise Against Hate

Announcement from the organization “Stand with Asian Americans”

“Amidst ongoing violence against the Asian community including, the tragic deaths of Michelle Go, Christina Lee, and GuiYin Ma in 2022, as well as the recent Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay shootings, community organizers nationwide are coming together on the second anniversary of the Atlanta killings. Together we’ll honor the lives lost, acknowledge the resilience demonstrated, and recognize the invaluable contributions of Asian workers, ranging from spa employees in Atlanta to farm laborers in Half Moon Bay, who are all too often overlooked. Commemorative events are planned for Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, New York, San Francisco.”

SAVE THE DATE THURS, 3/23, TO SUPPORT THE JAPANTOWN CHHESS

On Thurs, 3/23, the Board of Supervisors Public Safety & Neighborhood Services Committee, chaired by Supervisor Catherine Stefani with committee members Supervisor Joel Engardio and Supervisor Matt Dorsey, will review and make a recommendation on the Japantown Cultural History, Housing, and Economic Sustainability Strategy (Japantown CHHESS). The Committee will hear public comment of up to 2 minutes per person. 

Immediately preceding the hearing, a Japantown CHHESS press conference is scheduled at 9 am, City Hall, Room 408. Please come out to show your support! Also, we are seeking your letters of support. If you would like to submit a letter, either as an individual or on behalf of an organization, please be in touch with Cultural District Manager Susie Kagami, skagami@japantowntaskforce.org. Please also let Susie know if you can come to the 3/23 Press Conference and/or Committee Hearing. We need you! A full copy of the report is available at the JTF website.

Japantown Youth Navigators Paid Summer Program Applications Available

Deadline: Mon, 3/20

The Japantown Cultural District seeks San Francisco high school students for this paid opportunity to engage in hospitality and entrepreneurship training while staffing a new Japantown Cultural District Visitor Center (location pending) beginning on Fri, 4/7, through the summer (5 days per week), fall (weekends), and year-end (5 days per week). The program will conclude on 1/15/24. Students who participate fully are expected to earn at least $4,000. Priority will be given to students in the Japantown/Western Addition/Fillmore neighborhoods. Please share this application with San Francisco high school students in your networks! 日本町文化ディストリクトは、サンフランシスコの高校生を対象に、ホスピタリティーとアントレプレナーシップのトレーニングを、新しい日本町ビジターセンターでスタッフとして働きながら行います。
