We Are One, an inter-faith multi-racial community coalition, invites YOU to march for the third year in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024! Seeking dancers, musicians, and other folks to join in the parade. Register here. The parade starts off at 2nd and Market Streets, goes around Union Square and ends at Kearny Street & Columbus Ave. The distance of the parade route is approximately 1.3 miles. Practices are at the Chinatown YMCA, 855 Sacramento Street, San Francisco (confirm location on the WeAreOne SF website). ALL ARE WELCOME! Upcoming Practice Dates: Sunday, 2/18 4 - 5 pm Monday, 2/19 Make Up TBD Friday, 2/23 Rehearsal 6:30 - 8 pm February 24 Parade Day 5:15 parade start but contingent meets earlier, TBD. *There is no parking at the Chinatown YMCA. However, St. Mary's Square garage at 433 Kearny Street offers $6 flat rate parking. This is about a two-block walk to the YMCA. An announcement from our friends at the National Japanese American Citizens League: Join us on 2/24 for "Our Fragile Democracy: Historic and Present-Day Attacks on our Civil Rights and Civil Liberties." While this program will take place in L.A. at the Japanese American National Museum, folks in SF can "attend" virtually. California Attorney General Rob Bonta will be there and Don Tamaki is the keynote speaker. Register here. Background: On August 10, 2023, Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a historic statement and apology acknowledging the complicity of the California Attorney General’s Office in the incarceration and dispossession of Japanese Americans during World War II. A community education event will be held featuring a fireside chat with Attorney General Bonta and JANM President and CEO Ann Burroughs, a keynote introduction by Don Tamaki, and a panel discussion with key community leaders and scholars.
