From our friends at The Center: The Kase Interns of the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California are sponsoring a 2-day drop-in session for people to share their photos, personal documents, and mementos that reflect life in San Francisco Japantown and greater California area prior to December 7th, 1941. This Community Collections Day is part of the larger Japanese American Historical Archive (JAHA) project. JAHA is an extensive collection of rare Issei-focused treasures that illustrate and preserve the Issei generation’s experience. We aim to honor the history of these past generations by taking these precious items and making them readily available to the public. In order to make sure we can utilize your family history, we would like to ask that you contact us PRIOR to the Community Collections Day to learn more about your item. 「カセインターン生」たちは、1941年12月7日以前のサンフランシスコ日本町とその周辺のカリフォルニアでの生活を記録した写真、個人資料、記念品を展示する2日間の予約不要のイベントを開催します。

この「コミュニティ・コレクションズ・デー」は、大規模な「日系アメリカ人歴史アーカイブ (JAHA)」プロジェクトの一環です。JAHA は、一世 (Issei: 一番最初にアメリカ合衆国に移民してきた日本人) に焦点を当てた貴重な品を保管しているコレクションであり、一世世代の経験を記録し保存するものです。

私たちは、これらの貴重な品を一般の方が閲覧できるようにすることで、世代の歴史を大切に保管していきたいと思っています。

皆様のご家族の歴史資料を活用させていただくために、「コミュニティ・コレクションズ・デー」に先立ち、所蔵品について事前にご連絡くださいますようお願いいたします。

From our friends at First Voice: First Voice presents the fourth annual Story Circle of the Japanese Diaspora: Why Story, created and conceived by America’s first nationally recognized Asian American storyteller, Brenda Wong Aoki and Asian American jazz pioneer composer Mark Izu, on Saturday, 7/27, 10 am-12N. The purpose of the annual Story Circle is to bring together the lost tribe of people of Japanese descent who were forced to scatter during the incarceration, embrace our mixed-race children and the Shin-Issei community in order to heal, comfort, & strengthen through the power of personal story.  ファーストボイスが主催する、日系ディアスポラの物語の集い「Why Story」の第4回目が開催されます！

「Why Story」は、アメリカ初の著名なアジア系アメリカ人ストーリーテラーである Brenda Wong Aoki 氏と、アジア系アメリカ人ジャズの先駆者である作曲家 Mark Izu 氏によって企画・制作されたものです。開催日時は 7月27日 (土) 午前10時～午後１２時 です。

この「ストーリー・サークル」は、強制収容中に離散を余儀なくされた日系人の「失われた部族」を再び結びつけ、混血児や新一世コミュニティを受け入れ、個人的な物語を通じて癒し、慰め、そして強めることを目的としています。

無料の国際的なオンラインイベント で、毎年アメリカ全土や海外から100人以上の人が参加しています。このイベントの詳細については、こちらのウェブページをご覧ください。

Join local artist Rich Tokeshi at the “Beyond Basic Art” series on Saturdays, 10 am-12N at The Center, 1840 Sutter. This weekly art class designed for both intermediate and advanced art students will allow participants the opportunity to explore new media, subject matter and ways of thinking. This class will use basic drawing, painting concepts and subject matter, but will also look to expand participants' artistic horizons. The atmosphere of the class is very informal for creating art. Rich has been teaching at The Center for over a decade. Virtual participation and in-person drop-in participants welcome. Register and pay for classes here.

On its Golden Anniversary Year, 2024, the Nihonmachi Street Fair became the first festival to be designated as an official San Francisco Legacy Business. There is a new effort by Salt Lake City Next Gen JA to revitalize the Salt Lake City Japantown, a once thriving and bustling business district. Sign the petition directed to the Salt Lake City Council and County Board of Supervisor to urge them to include the Japanese American community in urban planning for the historic Japantown area.
