As we head into the President’s Day Holiday Weekend, we wanted to share a couple of important announcements.

Japantown Cultural History, Housing, Economic Sustainability Strategy (CHHESS)

JTF hosted a Japantown CHHESS community briefing for over 30 interested community members last night. You can find the presentation by Grace Lee, Cultural District Program Manager at the Mayor’s Office of Housing & Community Development, and Susie Kagami, JTF Cultural District Manager, here.　　　　　　　　　　　

The full document is available on the JTF website. If you would like a printed copy of the 98-page Japantown CHHESS document, you are welcome to stop by the JTF office to pick one up. Please contact Senior Management Assistant Akiko Klenk, aklenk@japantowntaskforce.org, to arrange a pick-up time. We want to hear from you! Please complete the feedback form available on the JTF website no later than Friday, 2/24 or call us at 415.346.1239.

Also, we need your support to get the document passed at the Board of Supervisors! If you or your organization are interested in providing a letter of support, please contact Susie at skagami@japantowntaskforce.org. Our plan is to submit the document to the Board of Supervisors in March for a final vote in April.

JTF Support the Save the 3 Jackson MUNI Line

Despite vocal support, the 3 Jackson MUNI line was not reinstated. Instead, the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, and 4 Sutter lines were consolidated into the 2 Sutter line. The 3 Jackson has been a lifeline for our neighbors living and working along Jackson Street north of California who no longer have direct access to Japantown locations or downtown (see route map below). Many Japantown seniors used the 3 Jackson to go up and down the hill on Sutter Street. The MUNI line also connects visitors staying downtown to Japantown shops and restaurants. The JTF Board voted to support the effort to restore the 3 Jackson line at its 2/15/23 board meeting.

The Save the 3 Jackson Coalition is organizing supporters to provide public comment at the upcoming Tues, 2/21/23 SFMTA meeting, beginning at 1 pm, City Hall, Room 400.
