From our friends at the Japantown Community Benefit District: The Office of Economic & Workforce Development and the Human Rights Commission are teaming up with SFMTA to host informational meetings for older adults (65 years old and older) and people with disabilities to learn about transportation resources available to them either free or low-cost to those that meet eligible criteria. This is a critical time for our community in the Western Addition with the closure of Safeway on Webster Street and the upcoming closures of nearby Walgreens. The next informational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 30th @ 2:00pm at the US Bank Community Room (located inside the Japan Center East Mall (1st floor by Uji Time). A message from State Senator Scott WIener: I will be hosting a virtual town hall to discuss the California Legislature’s Special Session and other work to defend California values in the coming year. I will discuss how the California Legislature will work to defend California’s values, given the new Administration that will take office on January 20th. I’ll also discuss how we’re working to address California’s challenges around housing, homelessness, public safety, public transportation, among other issues. Any constituent can join to ask questions or express their perspective.

HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY GARDEN A message from our neighbor, Emma Dolan: Happy New Year! I’m Emma Dolan, and I’m working in collaboration with the SF Recreation & Parks Department to build a new community garden for our neighborhoods (Western Addition, NoPa, and Japantown). I am reaching out today with some really great progress updates: (1) our proposed garden location, and (2) the next steps to make this garden build happen! In cooperation with SF Rec & Parks, we have selected a site at the Raymond Kimbell recreation area for building a new allotment-style community garden! Rec & Parks staff have completed a site investigation and cost assessment for this location, which we will discuss more at our upcoming Steering Committee meeting. This is great progress, but there is still lots to be done. In order to make this proposal a reality, you can take action now! Action Items: 1. Join our Steering Committee. The success of this project will require diverse skills & community connections. To accomplish this, I’m assembling a Steering Committee that will organize and oversee project progress. If you want to be a part of the Steering Committee for the Kimbell Community Garden, please complete this form. 2. Build strong community support for this project! Community support and leadership is crucial for our success. We can build our network of supporters by encouraging our neighbors to complete the Community Garden Support form.
