ABOUT THE JAPANTOWN CHHESS In 2018, The Japantown Cultural District (JCD) was designated the very first Cultural District in the City & County of San Francisco, bringing resources and funding to the nation’s oldest and one of three remaining Japantowns in the nation. Cultural Districts are funded by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development to stabilize historic communities at risk of displacement and gentrification, and address cultural heritage preservation in San Francisco. Cultural Districts were created to formalize partnerships with City agencies “to celebrate and strengthen the unique cultural identities of San Francisco’s neighborhoods; to preserve and promote diverse communities' cultural assets and to ensure that residents and institutions thrive.” A requirement of the Cultural District program is to create the Cultural History Housing Economic Sustainability Strategy (CHHESS) Report, a partnership agreement between the Japantown Community and four City Agencies; The Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD), Office of Workforce Development (OEWD), Arts Commission, and the Planning Department. From August 2019 through 2020, the Japantown Cultural District/Japantown Task Force staff reached out to many community organizations and conducted 8 focus groups, 3 town-halls, 1-on-1 interviews to gain community input from over 500 participants to envision the future of Japantown. The data was then synthesized and formalized into the CHHESS report categorized into six focus areas: 1) Cultural Heritage and Sustainability, 2) Tenant Protections, 3) Arts and Culture, 4) Economic and Workforce Development, 5) Land Use/Environmental Resilience, 6) Cultural Competency. Today, we are happy to publish the final draft of the 2023 Japantown Cultural District CHHESS report. This three-year strategy report is a culmination of input from you, the Japantown Community.
